AHSI....This movie is a great autobiography about Mr. Ernie Davis the all star running back for Syracuse University. He was also the 1st African American Athlete to win the Heisman trophy. For all you parents with a child who has a dream, I suggest that you show him/her this movie, it shows the trials and tribulations of a young man enduring racial hardships during an era; in which, the new generation would never understand. I was proud that I watched this movie before going to the Inauguration Ceremony for Barack Obama. I give this movie 5 eyeballs. Dennis Quaid stars as Coach and Rob Brown gives a dynamic performance.
ASSI – Ernie Davis was an exceptional football player who played for Syracuse University in 1958, an adaptation based on the nonfiction book The Elmira Express: The Story of Ernie Davis was made into a movie, “The Express” that was released on October 10, 2008, and is currently available on DVD. Rob Brown who starred in “Finding Forrester” and “Coach Carter” plays Davis, Charles S. Dutton plays his grandfather, and Dennis Quaid is Ben Schwarztwalder the Head Coach at Syracuse.
We are all unique and have life experiences that are worth telling and sharing, but there comes a time when someone has a more compelling story based on the time period, desire, athleticism, and life achievements made while on earth. Mr. Davis’ time expired before he had an opportunity to realize his true potential. He managed to accomplish two of his missions: he was the first Black Athlete to win the Heisman (He-is-man) Trophy in 1961 and signed with the Cleveland Browns.
“The Express” is family film that is appropriate for all ages, especially if you have children who are athletic or is simply striving to be there best. This isn’t a feel good movie that will cause you to bustle with excitement but the story captures your attention from the beginning and holds you captive until the end. As I see it, if you want to see an inspirational film “The Express” is a good movie night selection that will provide insightful facts and entertain you as well. I give “The Express” 3.5 blinks.
